Shopify SEO Checklist: 12 Technical Fixes That Move Rankings in 2026
Most Shopify stores leak rankings through the same set of technical issues. After auditing hundreds of stores, here are the 12 fixes that consistently move the needle — in priority order.
1. Fix duplicate content from /collections/ and /products/
Shopify creates two canonical URLs for every product: one under /products/ and one under /collections/product-handle/. Google can index both. Set canonical tags to always point to /products/.
2. Remove ?variant= parameter from indexation
Variant URLs are auto-generated and create thin duplicate pages. Add them to your disallow in robots.txt or use canonical tags to consolidate.
3. Consolidate /search?type=product URLs
Internal site search results are indexable by default. Block them via robots.txt or a noindex meta tag — see Google’s official guidance on blocking indexing.
4. Optimise collection page titles for search intent
Collection pages are your highest-value SEO assets. Each should target a specific keyword with a unique, search-intent-matched title tag and meta description.
5. Fix crawl budget waste from pagination
Use rel=next/prev or canonical on paginated collection pages to avoid diluting link equity and wasting crawl budget.
6. Add structured data to product pages
Product schema with price, availability, and review data unlocks rich snippets in Google. Shopify’s default theme adds basic schema — audit it to make sure it’s complete.
7. Improve internal linking from blog to collections
Your blog is an untapped link source. Every article should link to relevant collection and product pages using descriptive anchor text.
8. Compress and lazy-load product images
Images are the #1 cause of slow Shopify stores. Use WebP format, lazy loading, and appropriate sizing. Core Web Vitals directly affect rankings.
9. Fix 404s from deleted products
Discontinued products leave behind 404 errors and broken links. Redirect them to the closest live product or collection.
10. Set up Google Merchant Center correctly
Google Shopping is a separate channel that requires a verified Merchant Center account, product feed, and structured product data. Most Shopify stores set this up wrong.
11. Target informational keywords with blog content
Buying keywords are competitive. Blog content targeting “how to”, “best”, and “vs” queries builds topical authority that flows to your commercial pages.
12. Audit your backlink profile quarterly
Spammy backlinks from old link-building campaigns can suppress rankings. Use Google Search Console or Ahrefs to identify and disavow toxic links.
